About Reshawna:

Reshawna Chapple, PhD, LCSW, is a culturally responsive clinician and an associate professor of social work at the University of Central Florida. She has worked as a social worker in the areas of mental health, crisis intervention, education, and disabilities. Her areas of research and teaching include critical race feminism, intersectionality (race, gender, and disability), intimate partner violence among Deaf women and access to culturally responsive treatment and services for marginalized populations.

Educational Information

Reshawna received her B.S.W., M.S.W. and Ph.D. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University. Her latest publication “Towards a theory of Black Deaf feminism: The quiet invisibility of a population,” offers a theoretical framework for research, teaching and practice with Black Deaf women and by extension other women of color with disabilities is based largely from personal experience raising a deaf daughter and her dissertation titled, “Being a Deaf Woman in College is Hard. Being Black Just Adds: Understanding the Complexities of Intersectionality.”

Experience

Dr. Chapple Became a social worker after her first child was born deaf. She became interested in access to education and mental health services for people with disabilities. She began her career in crisis intervention and spent four years working on a crisis mobile team focused on suicide prevention while pursuing her doctorate. After obtaining her doctorate she continued to work in all areas of clinical practice focusing on clinical practice with families, crisis intervention, and culturally responsive practice. In addition to practicing, Dr. Chapple teaches classes in diagnosing mental illness, culturally responsive practice, and clinical practice with families.

Dr. Chapple began her career at Talkspace in August of 2016 to stay connected to clinical practice while teaching social workers coming into the field. The flexibility of Talkspace being virtual and asynchronous allowed her to practice while maintaining her busy teaching schedule. Currently Dr. Chapple is a part of the quality support team as well as the team of clinical experts in the area of culturally responsive therapy.
