What insurance does Talkspace accept?

Talkspace accepts insurance from many major insurance providers including Cigna, Optum, Carelon, Aetna, TRICARE, traditional Medicare, Regence, Anthem and more. We work with many health plans, employee assistance programs (EAP), and educational organizations to make online therapy available and affordable for all. You can view our full partner list here, and explore additional affordable therapy options at Talkspace.

What is Talkspace?

Talkspace is an online therapy platform that provides counseling, medication management, and other mental health services. It's the most convenient and affordable way to connect with a licensed therapist and receive virtual care all from the privacy of your device. Send your online therapist text, audio, picture, and video messages at any time, and they will respond daily, 5 days/week. If you’re looking for the “face-to-face” therapy experience, we also offer Live Video Sessions so you and your therapist can plan to connect in real-time.

Does Talkspace take insurance?

Yes! Talkspace partners with health plans across the U.S. to make online therapy and mental health care more accessible than ever before through insurance coverage. Our extensive network ensures you can get the treatment you need without worrying about cost. Covered members have an average copay of $15.*

*Copays represented are averages for Talkspace members. Please check your insurance coverage; your final copay may vary based on your coverage.

What if I’m not covered by my insurance?

Not to worry! Even if you don't have a health insurance plan that covers mental health services, Talkspace is still more affordable than most co-pays for in-person therapy. You can also pay with an FSA/HSA card, if you have one.

Many employers also offer employee assistance programs (EAP) designed to help employees access therapy and counseling services at very low to no cost. Check with your human resources department to see if there are any mental health services available to employees.

How does Talkspace protect my privacy?

At Talkspace, your privacy and security are our #1 priorities. Our platform is HIPAA-compliant and encrypted banking-grade, industry standard technology. All interactions with your therapist are confidential and private. In addition, Talkspace always requires a password for use, and our iOS app accommodates Touch ID and Face ID on enabled devices. For more details, read our Privacy Policy.

What mental health services are covered by insurance?

Coverage will depend on your insurance company and health plan. Some of the mental health services most often covered include:

  • Co-occurring behavioral health and medical conditions
  • Psychiatric emergency care
  • Talk therapy - cognitive behavioral therapy and psychotherapy sessions
  • Telemedicine or virtual therapy
  • Outpatient therapy sessions
  • Addiction treatment and detox services

Many health insurance plans may also cover medication management, ensuring a comprehensive approach to your mental health needs. Consult with your insurance provider for additional details.

Does insurance cover psychiatric care?

Coverage for psychiatric care will depend on your insurance provider. To see if you're covered for psychotherapy or psychiatric care, check our current partner list, contact your benefits department, or call the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
Your health plan may cover prescribed medication management, but specific questions about your eligibility, benefits, or prescriptions must be directed to your health insurance provider.

How much does a psychiatrist cost with or without insurance?

With Insurance: Generally, health insurance will cover psychiatrist visits. The amount of coverage you can expect will vary. There are multiple factors that impact your out-of-pocket expenses, including referral costs and in vs. out-of-network costs. Some plans may require a referral from a primary care doctor, and many will only cover in-network providers.

Without Insurance: Costs for an appointment with an online psychiatrist can vary depending on where you live and what mental health specialty you need. Generally, an initial assessment with a psychiatrist costs more than follow-up sessions because that initial session will be longer, include a mental health evaluation, and a preliminary treatment plan.

Can an online psychiatrist prescribe medication?

Yes! Online psychiatrists can identify and treat mental health conditions just like in-person providers. The key distinction between in-person and online psychiatric care is how the service is provided. Talkspace providers can conduct sessions from wherever you're most comfortable, with the added advantage of being able to prescribe medications to treat mental health conditions (with the exception of controlled substances) virtually. With added flexibility and convenience, you’re able to receive the mental health treatment you need without the hassle of traveling to an in-person office.

Does Aetna cover therapy and psychiatry?

However, even if your Aetna plan doesn’t cover online therapy or psychiatry, you can still submit an out-of-network claim for reimbursement in full or partial. Most Aetna insured members pay an average copay of $15 for Talkspace online therapy.*
