What is Celexa?

Celexa (or citalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication. It treats depression and other mental health conditions by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain, which is known to play a role in mood, sleep, and metabolism. This antidepressant drug works to improve your mood, reduce feelings of anxiety, and lessen panic attack symptoms.

What is Celexa used for?

Celexa (and its generic version, citalopram) can be prescribed to treat a number of mental health conditions, including depression, panic disorders, anxiety disorders, and some other conditions. It can also be prescribed off-label to treat some conditions like OCD. Some of the conditions Celexa treats include:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

With Talkspace Psychiatry, you’ll start with completing a brief assessment. Once you’re matched with a psychiatric clinician, you’ll discuss your symptoms over a live video session. After that, your psychiatric clinician will prescribe you a treatment plan. If your treatment plan includes a prescription for Celexa or any other medication, you can drop by your local pharmacy to pick it up.

Celexa (Citalopram) is taken in several different forms. The dosage and frequency will depend on your diagnosis and the treatment plan prescribed by your provider. It’s typically taken the same time each day, often in pill form.

It’s important to take Celexa and its generic form, Citalopram, exactly as prescribed by your clinician. Common side effects of Celexa are often mild, but can include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, heartburn, weight loss, and some others. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms/adverse effects: worsening mood, suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fever, fainting hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, confusion, twitching, swelling, seizures, difficulty breathing or swallowing, rash, hives, or itching, and more.

Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider to see if Celexa will interact badly with any of your current medications. Some drug interactions include blood thinners and Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Celexa can be very effective for treating anxiety as it works to reduce the absorption of serotonin by the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a positive role towards your mood. However, when serotonin is absorbed, it doesn’t leave much left to promote a positive mood in the brain. That way, taking Celexa can help support your mood and help you manage associated anxiety symptoms.

Celexa is more commonly prescribed for depression but can also be prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, certain eating and substance use disorders, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It is also used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in some cases.

Celexa isn’t typically prescribed for people with a history of Bipolar Disorder, mania, or hypomania, as it can increase chances of manic episodes in some people.

You should not drink alcohol while taking Celexa to avoid the potential for worsened side effects or overdose. As always, consult with a physician on how to integrate your medication into your lifestyle.

Low mood is a symptom of depression, which tends to have an impact on your energy and motivation levels. Since SSRIs like Celexa work to improve your mood, this may have a positive trickle effect on improving your energy levels as well.

There are several different medications your psychiatrist may prescribe for depression.

Other medications for depression prescribed at Talkspace include:

  • Lexapro (Escitalopram)
  • Prozac (Fluoxetine)
  • Remeron (Mirtazapine)
  • Zoloft (Sertraline)
